Need copy various multimedia files(wmv, mp3) and applications(exe) saved on
Win 98(FAT) to Win XP(NTFS).
Will the copying files to NTFS system affect anything? (wmv files quality or
its size, program's size, etc)
Will this be exact byte-to-byte copying?

thanks.

No, the file system doesn't matter.

The FAT or NTFS file system only refers to the file structure of how the
disk stores and retrieves files. A .txt, .exe, .dll, etc., are still the
same files they always have been, they're just stored in different manners.
Should be no problem in other words.

Yes, the copy will be an exact match of the original. The attributes about
the file that the file system stores will obviously differ, but the file
itself will be the same.

and if compare Win 2000 (NTFS 5) and Win XP (NTFS 5.1) - there are no
difference in file attributes?

Things like the created date/accessed date you should expect to be
different. Additional attributes such as ACL's, compression, encryption
will all vary depending on the configuration of the source and target file
systems and how they are configured. In short, you should expect these to
be different but that is irrelevant to the actual file.

No.

No.

Yes. It's no different from copying from a diskette (FAT12) to an NTFS hard
drive, or from the internet (where you generally have no idea what the file
system is) to an NTFS hard drive.

All should be fine.

For those who use partition imaging programs, don't attempt to copy the
resulting image files. The should be a separate programs for exploring
such, there should be an export feature for copying same to a different
location.

For corporate legal advice regarding the EULA for XP, check with a lawyer
qualified in corporate law.
