I have a lot of data on my C: drive which I want to transfer to D: using the
manual copy or move operation.
I'm assuming that a lot of files are corrupted because they all have had a
character in either their name or extn replaced by a little *square symbol*
and I cannot copy/move/rename or delete them {message is *cannot read from
source file ....* or something similar]
How can I either repair them or get rid of them?

You could run CHKDSK on the drive to find out if it can delete the
defective files for you. If no you may have to manually copy over all
good files and then re-format the partition with the defective files.
