Okay that header doesn't make clear my search. Before I disconnect my XP
drive is there a way to make a copy of all the info on that drive, but not
really copy the files themselves.. just a record of what's there if in the
future I'm looking for a file that I may not have copied over.. I can search
that other drive without it actually being connected ?? make sense ??

I have forgotten the exact command, but there is a way to pipe the output of
a "DOS" command to a document file. (I know it's not really DOS any more.)
So you would want a directory listing of all files on a drive and you would
want that directory to be sent to a file.
Once you have that file -- which would be a very large file for a
document -- you could open it and use the search function to find the file
name.
I'd done this years ago with XP, but I can't remember all the commands now.
It may come to me, or maybe I've provided enough of a hint for someone else
to figure it out.

I can't seem to get the cd:\ command to work. It keeps telling me the file
name, directory name etc is invalid. Maybe it's a permissions issue. This is
using Vista; the issue might not be there in XP.

At any rate, though, changing the directory is not necessary as long as you
know the letter of the drive you're trying to copy. Then it's "dir c: /s /a
> c:\list.txt" if C is the letter of the drive you're trying to access.

Also, if you have Word or Open Office or the like, if you make the document
LIST.DOC instead of LIST.TXT, It will open in your word processor instead of
Notepad.

I didn't get it to work.. I was actually hoping for a more graphic option..
I have a program called cd bank that catalogs all of my data discs.. it
looks somewhat like windows explorer,
