There seems to be an issue where if we drag and drop or copy then
paste (either right-click menu or CTRL+C then CTRL+V) an attachment
from Outlook 2003 to almost any other program then it fails silently.
i.e. the file does not get copied.
The only time it works is if we copy/drag to Explorer or other Office
programs.

I know this problem was worse in Outlook 2000 since back then you
could not even drag attachments from a received email to one being
composed there which works in Outlook 2003, so it seems that Outlook
is doing something weird with the clipboard data or something.

My questions are this:
1. Has this been fixed in the most recent version of Outlook? (the
expensive solution).
2. Is there some way to configure Outlook to behave 'normally'?
3. Has anyone had any luck with, or can recommend a third-party
(freeware) clipboard utility that could act as a intermediate step?
(instead of the painful "save to desktop, then open from program"
route).

Not sure I follow, perhaps I missed something
If you receive an excel or other office doc attachment, why are you not
simply opening the attachement, which will open in the default office app?

For example:

- I receive a PNG file as an attachment.
- I wish to file it into a drag and drop based document storage
program.
- I click on the PNG attachment icon displayed in outlook's preview
pane
- I drag it and drop it on to the storage program. Nothing happens.
-- If i drag it and drop it on to Explorer say, the attachment is
extracted from the email and the PNG file is re-generated.

Now for myself it would be little trouble to just "save to desktop,
alt-tab to the program and import the file". However, the issue lies
with our many users who would be unhappy to have to do the long-winded
way instead of a simple drag and drop procedure (we are migrating them
from an Outlook/public folders type of storage system to an outlook/
web GUI system).

Ok that explains it.
If you are storing all attachments in a common destination folder there are
third party tools available on www.slipstick.com which maybe of use, I have
used the mapilabs one

Thanks for the link, it's a good resource for Outlook utils and i'm
sure we will find some of them very useful. Unfortunately the ones
relating to attachments are not suitable for what we had in mind.
It would seem that what we require would be a change to the way that
Outlook itself handles file data when an attachment is extracted from
a displayed email, possibly we need to speak to microsoft about it,
but once again thank you for your suggestions.
