My website is stored on a server that is running Front Page extensions. I
want to copy only the database files (2) from the remote site to my local
site. I do not want to copy any of the html files. Can I do this?

If you publish the site back to your local, then only most recent content will be published when you
use the Change Pages Only option of publishing.

With any version of FrontPage:
Open the remote (server) site and use File->Export to export the
database to your desktop, then import into the local website overwriting
the old version.
In FrontPage 2003, right click the database and use "Publish selected
files" to publish directly to your local site.

Or, as mentioned by Idaspode, (especially if the database is large) use
FTP to download the database. Do NOT move any folders named _vti* or
any files in those folders - this will corrupt the FrontPage extensions.

If you Export or FTP directly to your local site, then open the local
site in FrontPage and run Tools->Recalculate Hyperlinks to update the
meta data.

I lost all my computer files on Front Page in a computer crash. I started
trying to copy the files from the remote site to my Front Page yesterday, but
I am on direct dial and it said that it would take 24 hours to download - and
my server is constantly interrupted the first 4 hours only took in 1 hour of
the 24 hours. Is there any other way I can get my remote website into my
Front Page software? I realize I am somewhat computer illierate (self
taught) and can't even figure out to start a new question in this website
(keep getting a notice that it is being blocked as unsafe). Please help. I
really do need to edit my website and this has been going on for over a month
now - with one problem and another.

Thank you. I have thought of two ways that I might be able to eventually
retrieve my website - which is approximately 50 pages and at least a thousand
photos. Here's the first way:
1) Create another web site on Front Page and re-create one page at a time,
starting with the Index. Then when finished, send it to the remote site -
would this would work?
2) Take my computer to someone who has Hughes network or AOL and hook it up
to their server and transfer my complete website from the remote site. Would
this work? This is much easier....I have friends.
3) I have been able to copy and paste my entire website to My Documents and
to a CD - however, as a whole page it is read only. However, I can dissect
or de-construct (popular now anyway) each page in Print Shop, then transfer
it by copy and pasting to Front Page - again it would have to be labeled as a
separate webpage or website - could it then be sent to the remote site?

1) Would work - but each time you publish you will be asked if you want
to delete all the other files on the server.

2) That would also work - but instead of taking your computer, take a
thumb drive or two - easier to carry. Your friend can download the site
to his computer using FTP, then copy to the thumb drives. 50 pages and
1000 images should easily fit onto a 2GB drive with 1.9GB to spare (if
the images have been optimised).
The files can then be copied from the thumb drive to a folder on your PC

3) My Documents should not be read only, though a CD will be - or do you
mean you copied a CD containing your web site to My Documents? If this
is the case, then remove the Read Only attributes from the folder (in My
Documents) containing the web site - In Windows Explorer:
right click on the folder and choose Properties
Clear the Attributes check box labelled Read-only
Click Apply
In the Confirm dialogue, Select Apply changes to this folder, subfolders
and files
Click OK
Click OK
You should now be able to open the folder in FrontPage and edit the
contents.

A 4th solution:
Use FTP to download the pages, leaving the images on the server. The
images can be retrieved as and when you can, a few at a time.
Again, when you publish, you will be asked to delete the images from the
server - be careful to say NO.

One problem you will have eventually, and that is you will have to
publish the complete site in one direction or another - with dialup it
is faster to download from server to PC. This is required so that
FrontPage can determine what files should be where, and manage
publishing changed files only. There is no way around this.

If you have FrontPage 2003, you can use Publish selected files only -
right click on the files you wish to publish and choose Publish Selected
Files. There will not be any prompts to delete anything this way.
