Hi all, I have a HDD that has many files I need to put on another backup
drive with files like pdf, doc, jpg etc. and then I will wipe the HDD. I
tried to use the windows xp search program but when I select a buch of files
it found and then click and drag to explorer at the bottom that then goes to
my backup drive it says an error of "cannot copy file: cannot read from the
source file or disk". Is there a way to use a dos command in Start / Run /
Command - to search the whole HDD and copy all the *.jpg, *.doc etc to
another HDD?

Also how could I make it so that any files that are named the same be saved
to the HDD as eg: file1.doc, file2.doc, file3.doc etc

or is there a better free program on the net that can do all as above? I
dont need to do a full backup of the HDD only important files as I have been
given a HDD to copy all important files and then keep the HDD, it had
windows xp on it but I will use it for something else.

Thanks GK

GK:

Open a command window and enter:

xcopy /?

This will display the help page for the XCOPY command. If you take the
time to study the switches available, and do a few tests, you can do
quite sophisticated filtering of exactly which files get copied.
