WinME keeps shutting down and restarting, can be doing any
number of actions, playing a game, searching the net,
using MSword or excel or not doing anything, it sometimes
goes jerky like a stutter in movements, sometimes freezes
but most often shuts down and restarts itself.

Hi -

You're posting to a Windows XP newsgroup. You'd get better responses
appropriate for Windows ME if you post to
microsoft.public.windowsme.hardware.

In any event, it's possible that your system is overheating. You may wish
to disconnect it from all external power, open it up and look to see if all
your fans turn freely and to remove all the accumulated dust and other crud
from inside the case. You can remove accumulated dust by using a can of
compressed air to blow it all out (compressed air is available from most
computer and electronics stores and many office supply stores).

After cleaning things out, with the case still open and without touching the
"innards" while doing this, reconnect the power, your monitor, mouse and
keyboard. Start it up and visually inspect all of your fans - Are they all
spinning freely? If not, it's replacement time.

If you are still having problems and you're not proficient with working with
computers, take it into a shop and have it diagnosed. It could be something
so simple as the interface material between the CPU and the heat-sync/fan
having dried out. Or it could be something far more serious, such as your
power supply starting to give up the ghost.

You would probably get an answer quicker if you posted your ME problem to a
ME group. When you do, give more detail, such as any error messages, etc.

Dearie me, does it really?! That really is unfortunate, but why in Hades are
you posting here?! Had you bothered to check the group topic before posting,
you'd have seen that a) this is a hardware group and b) it concerns *WINDOWS
XP*.

But you didn't, obviously, you just posted to the first group you stumbled
into.
