I copied all the photos from my camera to disc which then automatically
deleted all the pictures from my camera. I then wrote all the files to CD
which then ejected the disc on completion. I then put the CD back into the
computer and it was blank so now have lost all 500 pictures that were on my
camera! Help!

These pictures should still be on your hard drive. You copied them from your
camera to your hard drive. From your hard drive you copied them to a CD.
Copying to the CD did not work. OK. But the pictures are still on your hard
drive.
If you cannot find them on your hard drive, there is software to recover the
files from the memory card of your camera:

In addition to the recovery software Yves
suggested...Recuva is also worth a try.
It can recover your images from the memory
card if you did not format it after the deletion.

I actually copied them straight onto CD (trying to be smart!) so I don't
think they're on my hard drive anywhere.. I've tried searching!

I did not mention that if your memory card is from SanDisk you can go to
they site and use their free recovery software.

You made two bad moves. Always copy to your hard drive. Never allow the
software you are using to delete the file from your camera memory card.
After you check that you have the photos on your hard drive and then on the
CD, delete the file from your memory card using your camera. To do this,
look in your camera manual for "FORMAT". This will be on one of the menu.
You format the card with your camera. This will delete all the files and
make it ready for new files.

Just remember not to Format the camera's internal card or you will lose all your
pre-sets.

Most cameras have a "delete" button that allows deletion of photos without
formatting.

My Kodak camera has "delete picture" and "delete all" as options when in preview
mode.

I used Sony, Minolta and Canon cameras. All have Format on File menu. No
problem using such. This is the recommended way to do it by all of them. Use
your camera to delete and use Format to delete everything and make the
memory card ready for new photos. Other camera manufacturers may recommend
something else.
As far as I know, NEVER let your computer software delete pictures from your
camera card or format your camera card.
