Copied cells do not calculate

Using Excel 2007, I am copying equations from an .XLS file, but when I paste
them into the destination file and manually calculate, nothing happens in
those cells. Other equations in the spreadsheet calculate normally, but the
copied equations do nothing. The copied equations appear normal and are
present in the cell, but the cell itself produces a blank. Somehow I got
into "Compatability Mode" and I thought that may have something to do with
it. But when I try to save the file as an .XLSX it still stays in
"Compatiblity Mode". This is very furstrating and I am nearing a deadline.
I have tried the suggestions in somewhat similar posts, such as verifying the
number format (vice text), but nothing seems to help.
