Hi,

We've just bought six Socket A Sempron 2400 (OEM - no cooler)
processors to keep our older Socket A based kit running for a little
longer (We had two or three Athlon XP 1800 processors die on us). We
have some unused coolers which are designed for the Athlon XP 1800+.
Will these be good enough to cool the Semprons, and if not, can anyone
give us a recommendation - but not anything big like Scythe produce! I
use them at home, but there's no way work will pay for those type of
coolers!

They should be. Depends really on your case ventilation and your ambient
temperature (running outside in the middle of Death Valley is harder
than the average shed in Greenland, for some reason). Suck it and see -
worst case they should degrade gracefully. However check that your old
SocketA motherboards have a BIOS which understands Sempron (speed and
power requirements).

Why did the XP1800s die? .. even one death is pretty damn unusual, 3 is
unbelievable unless you are stressing hem out somehow..

I'm not sure about the suitability of the old XP 1800+ coolers - I didn't
follow the evolution of the cores closely back then for improvements in
heat output or otherwise. For a decent well priced option now, there's
this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835150023. I've
used a similar cooler when they were sold under Speeze and it worked fine
for me and it's not loud. It also has the three-lug attachment which is
preferable to the single-lug. The same/similar(?) heatsinks are sold by
Spire AFAIK.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Try the old ones - they must fit
mechanically. If the systems don't show the signs of overheating
(lockups, spontaneous reboots, bluescreens, and such) just leave them
alone. Else you have a problem you have to address within the limits
of the budget and physical constrains (the cooler must fit the
motherboard and the case). Since you are the one who knows the
details, you have to make the decision.

The original AthlonXP 1800+ (Palomino core, 180nm fab process)
consumes up to 66W of power. The newer Sempron 2400+ (Barton 256K
core, 130nm fab process) consumed only 62W. So the newer, faster chip
is actually easier to cool then the older chips, ie your cooler should
work with no trouble at all.
