Cookie, History & Temp Internet File Folders not found

Am running XP Home w/SP2 and all current OS updates installed.
The cookie folder, supposedly should be in C:\Documents and
Settings\Username\ cannot be seen.
Likewise the Temp Internet File and History folders, supposedly should be in
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\ cannot be seen.
All settings in folder options and internet options have been checked and
are correct according to my extensive search on this and other sites. I have
even tweaked the registry in several areas to try and make them appear. All
to no avail.
I suspect a Malware or Spyware issue but my scanner (Trend Micro 2008
Internet Security Suite- fully installed) has not found any issues of
significance. Those it did find were either cleaned, deleted or quarantined.

Any help woud be greatly appreciated

Have you searched for those directories... easiest would be a search
for "cookies"?

Have completed searches. Only folders for Cookies, Temp Internet Files and
History are found in C:\Documents and Settings\Default User

I'm clueless at this point. You mentioned that Trend Micro found some
stuff... before or after you noticed the missing folders?

I don't suppose you have a backup of your system, right?

Have you tried System Restore yet?

No backup unfortunatley. The Trend Micro stuff was picked up after. Tried
system restore back to the earliest available- no luck.
I also tried to create new folders with the correct names and was prevented
since I got messages that folders already exist with those names. I know the
folders are there- just cannot see them.
Opening Internet Properties then selecting View Files on the Temp Internet
Files pane will open a window that shows the files and contains the correct
folder location on the address bar.
I keep thinking this is a registry issue but do not know for sure.

The only option that I would think of it were my problem is to run a
repair install of XP.
