My wife has some sermons saved to floppies. I believe she created the files
on our old Windows 97 machine.
I have managed to move the files to the hard drive of this XP machine.
Still, I have been unable to open them, even after downloading
OOo_3.0.1_Win32Intel_install... ; all I get are rows of the same character,
kind of like y's with umlauts over each one, rows and rows of the same
character.
Is there a way for me to open these files and save the sermons in another
format?

You can open those files with Word Viewer 2003:

Sure, they are older WordPerfect files. You just need to install the
WordPerfect filters/converters for whatever word processor you have. Many
of these are not installed by default.

HTH
-pk

OR they may be Microsoft Works files. (.wps is the file extension used by
Microsoft Works word processor documents, at least in the older versions).

Yep, you're right. Same comments about conversion filters apply.

No, WordPerfect Documents are .wpd, not .wps.
Wps are MS Works files.
