I hope someone can help me here. I made the mistake of buying a Compaq
for my daughter. I build all of my one systems but I was busy and well
bought this system that reminded me why I never buy prepacked consumer
PC's. This product was so laiden with gimmicks and spy ware that it
eventually became unusable. All I want to do now is scrub the OS and
load a non-consumerized version of XP.

Problem = No install or recovery disk, just a recovery partition.
Can't find drivers for any of the devices. If you go to HP's site and
attempt to load drivers there are none! Perhaps they are still working
on getting the site funcional.

Can anyone point me in a direction to acquire their device drivers so
I save this machine. I would just do a restore from their restore
partition but the last thing I want to end up with is their horrible
OS again.

The original factory Windows XP installation has many items
added. When you use the Recovery method, the installation
of Windows XP will be much "cleaner", so go ahead and do it.
The drivers are included in the Recovery partition.

Many of COMPAQs utilities are inherently buggy computer-crashing machines.
Here is what I do for my friends when they ignore my advice:


1. Use COMPAQ Restore utility to return system to factory specs
2. Most (or all, depending upon model) of COMPQ utilities can be removed
using "Add/Remove Programs"
3. Those utilities that can not be removed in step 2 can be stopped using MS
Config utility. Once these utilities are stopped, delete their entries from:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

4. After rebooting, run MS Config to return to "Normal Startup" ("Normal no
longer has pesky COMPAQ junk)
5. Reboot for Step #4 to take effect, and you have a pristine system that
includes all of the custom drivers for COMPAQ custom hardware.
6. Not required, but since it is a family member, clean out the detritus
left over from using the "Remove Programs" routine -- most of the COMPAQ
folders (and contents) will still be hanging around.

Thanks to all but I would prefer to just get my hands on the drivers
only. The HP link shown above contains no drivers at all other than a
firmware upgrade for the CD writer. I tried the removal process and it
is too laborious. It looks like Compaq gets a lot of revenue from
third parties that have thier trial offers and junk throughout this
machine. There has to be someone out there that knows what devices are
in this "machine".

Lesson learned = Don't buy consumer junk and think twice about HP low
end products in general ala scanners like the 5370C !!! I own tons of
top quality HP test equipment but their recent ventures into the PC
market is riddled with half-baked products unworthy of the brand.

If Compaq doesn't offer the drivers on their site, and they use proprietary
hardware, you may well be out of luck. I have installed Windows XP on older
Compaq laptops and found that everything functioned fine, except for the
touchpad. I had to find the drivers for that.

The really fun part is that you can't even use the case since the Mobo
is a custom size! I have come to the conclusion that the name "Compaq"
likely was born of the fact that they belong in a trash compaqtor.
