I have a bunch of older MS Works files that i need to convert to Word 2003.
When I try to open them using the filters for both "Works 6.0 & 7.0" or the
other "Works 7.0" they appear scrambled. Is there a utility to batch convert
these files?

Try the convertors from Graham Mayor's web site:

http://www.gmayor.com/downloads.htm

I believe they go back further than v6.0 & are no longer included 'in the
box'.

You need the appropriate filter for the Works version that created the
documents and the Batch Conversion wizard. The former you may download from
my web site, the latter I believe still comes packaged with Word but may not
be installed by default.
