I need a freeware to convert a EDB file to a PST file. (long story about h/w crash) ?

EDB as in, your Exchange database files? There's no free utility - but
PowerControls from www.ontrack.com will do this for you.

Of course, if you have a full online backup of your Exchange server, there
are other methods - and no extra cost.

Software is most reliable than Services, because of software completes their job in fronts of your eyes but the services is not performing in front of your eyes.. This is naturally Exchange database files are too large in size and this is very typical task to send too big files (Exchange Database files) on world wide... On that condition software is very helpful than any services... So i always recommend you to use EDB to PST conversion software to complete their job..

In the real market, various companies provides the Exchange database recovery software that performing the successful conversion of EDB to PST.

There are no free solutions, however Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp can open for Exchange 2010, 2007, 2003, 2000 or 5.5 offline EDB's so that you can browse mailboxes, search for items, export mailboxes, folders, items or search results to PST, MSG, XML or if desired recover directly back into any production Exchange server and even cross version.

Ya if you need any paid solution then there is so many software available to convert edb to pst like stellar phoenix exchange server recovery software which can easily convert your edb files to pst files.
