The command to convert a fat32 drive to ntfs are as follows:

convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs.

My DVD drive is E:, so at the command prompt, I type convert E: /fs:ntfs and
press enter. The following message is returned: "Cannot convert "Cannot
convert volume on this device."

Why? and what can I do to convert my DVD drive to ntfs?

Because DVD are neither FAT32 nor NTFS and can *not* be either FAT32
or NTFS. FAT32 and NTFS are file system that pertain to hard drives
only.

You can not.

DVD drives can not be formatted, but DVDs can.

If you are writing DVDs, the writing software should offer several choices,
depending on whether you are writing a data DVD, video DVD, slide show, etc.
You may also have options ot "close" or "finalize" or to leave "open" for
further writing. Read the manual for the DVD writer for more information.

If you are simply reading DVDs, then the format is preset by whomever wrote
them.

If you are having trouble reading/playing DVDs, you may need special
software, such as video DVD player program.

Why?
It's not FAT32.

What can you do?
Stop trying to stuff the large square peg into the small round hole...
(In other words - research, understand what you can/cannot do and then do
what you can and don't waste time doing what you cannot.)

I don't find your comment helpful. I feel like I've been scolded. Shame on
you! I would have expected better from a MS-MVP.

If you feel scolded - that is you _reading into_ my response.

You asked two questions, I answered them in a way anyone could understand
and suggested that you do research in the future to help you learn. So many
problems seem to stem from people 'just doing' instead of 'understanding and
then doing' - sometimes reminding them of that makes them think twice the
next time.

If you feel my reminding you of something simple such as that (look before
you leap, etc) is 'scolding' you - my apologies for your misunderstanding;
but I assure you - it is you reading into my response and not its intention.

Some MVP's are oblivious to how condescending their "help" is. Microsoft may
have awarded them for their past efforts but does not provide them with
interpersonal skills training. As with anyone else responding in these
groups take what you can from an MVP and leave the rest.

CDs and DVDs do not support either FAT32 or NTFS. What they use is CDFS
(that is Compact Disk File System).

CDFS is a redirector. The fomats commonly used by optical devices like CD-R
and DVD are UDF, ISO 9660, Joliet, MPV etc.
