I'm running OL2007 under Vista Home Premium SP2.

It looks as though I can't convince my daughter to purge stuff from her
files, so I have to switch from a 2002-style .pst file to a 2007-style. The
Help system instructions for doing this with import-export are clear, but
I'm concerned about filenames. I recall having trouble renaming an Outlook
file in the past, so I want to make sure that my intentions are honorable.

I think I would be most comfortable if I didn't have to change the filename
referenced under Account Settings (call it "current.pst"). Is it okay to
1) rename that file "temp.pst", 2) create a new (2007-style)
"current.pst", 3) import "temp.pst" to "current.pst", then delete
"temp.pst"?

On the other hand, if changing the Account Settings file name is okay,
please warn me about any pitfalls.

I would do this the other way around... create a new 2007 pst file on/in a
dedicated data folder (e.g. c:\my_data\outlook.pst). Since the new file is
a secondary file, move (or import) what needs to be moved from the old PST
file to the new. Once that is done, then reconfigure Outlook so that
c:\my_data\outlook.pst is the default PST file. Restart Outlook and then
close the old PST file. At this point you should be able to close Outlook
and delete the old PST file.
