I switched several Outlook clients from using an Exchange server to
connecting directly to their ISP based email. But now many emails fail to
send (they remain in the Outbox with a quickly displayed cryptic error). It
appears this is due to the addresses having been in an address book that was
hosted on the Exchange server that are no longer accessible. I've tried
removing the address book references from the client, but they addresses
remain in type-ahead address completion suggestions, and the mails fail to
send even if I manually type in adresses. Other addresses that are not in
the old address book work just fine.

How do I copy the old addresses into client based contacts and remove all
references to the server based addresses?

to get rid of the old cached version of the addresses you can create a new
profile (deleting the old one) then import the old data back in from the old
..pst files into the new black one. Or if your still using exchange you can
just delete the profile and recreate it in cached mode. both of the ways
delete the cached addresses.

All bad advice. First, one can simply delete the NK2 file (the
autocompletion cache) and let Outlook recreate it from scratch to get rid of
the old addresses (which is what the OP was seeking to do). Second the OP
said they're connecting to an Exchange server. They may not have "old PST
files". Third, export and import are rarely the way to handle the type of
issue (or any issue, for that matter) that the OP described.

The point was to clear the cache. The way I described it would acclomplish it
would work as well as yours. It is not "bad advice" because its different
then yours. Second, he would have to have a .pst file. How else would he be
able to be attempting to send mail? Using an .ost that is no longer
connected to exchange. that would not make sense. You should concentrate on
helping others and not trying to prove to everyone else that you think you're
smarter.

Yes it was because it recommended completely unnecessary actions. One
doesn't amputate a foot because one has a hangnail.

However, importing loses data and one doesn't need a new profile in order to
attach a new PST. In fact, if the Exchange server is gone, but one's
Exchange account is still defined in the profile, creating a new mail
profile would ELIMINATE the ability to copy the data in the OST to a PST.

But it has unwanted side-effects that simply deleting the NK2 file won't
