Hi!
If I were you, I would connect the cassette player to the LINE IN on the PC. This will yield a better sound for conversion. As well, you will need a sound-editing application for the job. This could be in the form of the LP recorder application that is part of Plus Digital Media Edition or WavePad (search the CNET Download site or a good download site for this freeware application). On the other hand, you could look for applications like SoundForge to do the job.
To record from cassette to your PC, you start the application and put it in record-pause mode. Play the tape for a while and adjust the levels on the recording software so you are just below the "red" VU mark. Then rewind the tape and simultaneously start playing the tape and recording the content using the application.
After you have finished, save your recording as a WAV file using your application's File-Save routine. Break up this recording into tracks for each logical content piece (such as a song, topic, etc) then use your CD-burning application to burn the CD. You may use your sound-recording application to cut out clicks and extraneous noise, boost level or clean out tape hiss using the application's frequency "notch-filter" routine.
With regards,
Simon Mackay
