Hi,

When I click Start, Settings, Control Panel, a setup/installer box
shows up, as if an install program is launching (dialog box with
"Preparing to install...", etc.). It then goes away, and the control
panel shows up.

Double-clicking My Computer does the same thing - installer dialog
shows up and then goes away, and then the content of My Computer
shows.

Of course, this didn't happen at one point in time, so something has
changed on my system to do this.

Where can I go to look/disable this from happening? What's going on
here?

What happens if you go to Start, Run and type in control <enter>?
This will (should) open the control panel window - that may give more
clues...

If you have MS Office installed, do these applications (like Word)
start okay? Probably not related, but curious.

If you have Tweak UI installed, have you changed anything in there
lately?

Doing Start, Run and then control <enter> does the same thing -
I get an installing program dialog box that shows for about 1/2 a
second, twice, and then the control panel shows up.

I launched MS Word 2003 and it opened normal without any boxes
flashing.

I haven't used TweakUI in a long time.

It does appear that looking at My Computer and opening the Control
Panel are related in what Windows is doing to get the windows open...

????
