Does anyone know how to control the font that Word 2007 uses when it opens a
..txt file that has been previously created in another application e.g.
Notepad.

Regardless of the default font setting that I use for Word documents the
file always opens with the Courier New font and a font-size of 10.5 - I need
to open a file with a proportional font instead and ideally control the
font-size as well. Obviously I could change the font after opening the file
but that's no good as I want the correct font applied at the time of opening.

Any suggestions?

I am having the same problem. Did you happen to find a solution for
this?

No patrick I do not have a solution yet for a straight text file (.txt) but
maybe I will change the creation of my source file to Rich Text Format (.rtf)
and embed the appropriate rtf commands to control the font. I have tested
this approach and it seems to work.

Hi Barry,

Word applies the 'Plain Text' paragraph style plus direct formatting when you open a .txt file. You can modify the style to use a
different font, but Word seems to want to insist that as part of the conversion process that you're going to see monospaced font to
preserve fidelity of the text file when viewed.

If you use Ctrl+A to select all of the text in the document then Ctrl+Spacebar Word will remove the direct formatting and leave the
text to match your font settings for the 'plain text' paragraph style in Word (you can change the setting of that style). If you
use Ctrl+Shift+N after Ctrl+A your document will show the 'Normal' style applied
