Control-Alt-Del problem

Hi

My computer seems to hang up after about 15 minutes after first start up and
even the 3-finger salute does nothing. The OS is windowsxp pro with service
pack 2. Control+alt+delete brings up the security window and if the task
manager is selected (or any other item ie log off) it just reverts to a
desktop background with no icons showing. The only way to get back is to
press the reset switch!
It's driving me crazy.
Can any expert advise please?
