When trying to view photographs or play games the picture
is much too dark. I have made adjustments to my monitor
but the problem still persists.

How can adjust these problems with windows XP?

If you've already adjusted your monitor and the brightness is OK in
other applications, look in Display Properties (Control Panel applet)
for any "tuning" options you can do with your video card. You should
also update your video card drivers from the mftr. If that doesn't
work, then you may need a new video card. What is the make/model of the
video card you have?

I'm assuming that your monitor's on-screen controls aren't making the
necessary adjustments for you.

If you are satisfied with the way your screen displays outside of
games, then some, but not all, games have options (usually on the load
screen) where you can tweak the screen brightness for just the game
itself.

If your game does not have that section then right click your desktop
and choose properties and look at the Settings tab to check whether
you are using the correct monitor profile. If you have the correct
monitor profile then click the Advance button. Some drivers have a
gamma section that will also adjust the screen's brightness.

Try the monitor with another computer. Do you have the same problem or can
you get sufficient contrast/brightness by using the monitors controls?

If you get the same condition, your monitor's CRT electron guns are getting
weak (age). Sure, you can overdrive the guns by using controls in some video
cards (in the 60's and 70's T.V. techs would install a booster on a failing
CRT) to extend it's life. The undesirable side effect is that it could, and
in many cases did, hasten the death of the CRT. Many died within hours/days.

Be prepared to purchase a new monitor!

Greetings --

It may be time to replace the monitor, then.
