Continuing Vuescan Problems

I am running OSX 10.3 on a Mac G4. When I moved to OSX full-time I
could no longer (easily) use my beloved scanning software; ScanPrep,
and switched to Vuescan. I am currently on 7.6.72. I have a continuing
freezing issue wihen using Vuescan. More often than not, it gets about
halfway through a scan and just quits. I get the eternally-spinning
beachball and have to completely reboot. I can't even force-quit
Vuescan. I thought downloading the latest version yesterday might fix
it, but no luck. it's getting to where I am thinking I need to find
another program, although I like Vuescan when it works. My scanner is
a somewhat dated UMAX Powerlook, connected to my Mac via SCSI. Any
ideas?
