IE 6.0 -- Apparently something has just changed with the behavior of my
browser searches. When I click on a link in the returned list of links in the
left-hand search window it opens in the search window itself instead of the
right-hand main window as it has done forever!

Can't seem to find the reason although Comcast just released a beta version
of it's new web site and it apparently has a search engine....thought maybe
that could be a factor because I don't think I changed anything else.

I haven't tried this question site before but would be most appreciative of
any ideas on what's going on! A minor issue but a nuisance becasue once the
content appears the rest of links are gone and I have to reenter the search.

Thanks, Searay

Hi Searay,

What Search Provider are you using?
It would appear that they have changed their side search page.
You can click on the "Settings" link on the top of the Side Bar to change
the serach provider.

Other possible causes are
software to change the way web sites see your browser version (UserAgent
string)

Regards.

Get the .reg file at the bottom of this page to reset the default IE 6
search registry entries. Follow the instructions to unzip the file, read it
in text format, then change the extension to .reg and merge with your
registry. http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/42.html

If no joy, then the behavior of the site set as the one for the search pane
is not coded correctly, perhaps.

I use Google for my searches, and the search pane still behaves correctly.
Try installing the Google toolbar - http://toolbar.google.com If you'd
rather not use it, Google has .reg files to make it the default here:
http://www.google.com/options/defaults.html - scroll down to the "Make
Google Your Default Search Engine" section and use the second linked .reg
file mentioned in the sentence:
"By default, Google will show results in the search channel window, leaving
the main window for browsing. If you prefer seeing the search results in the
main window, try this file instead."

Situations like this have happened over the years going back to the IE 4
days when changes have been made via Windows Updates to the default IE
search settings.

I am a computer instructor at an elementary school. We have not changed any
settings on our computers. We are using IE 6. On some of the computers when
you click on a link in the search window, it opens up the page in the search
window. If I choose a specific search engine like Alta Vista it opens the
link correctly. The only time I am having problems is when I set it to search
all engines. I have tried reseting the search engines and that did not fix
the problem.

Thanks,
Liz

Liz - if your computers are set to the default IE search provider, now
called Windows Live Search, then there's a coding problem on that search
site that is causing this issue. Hopefully they will fix the problem soon -
they know about it, or so I've been informed. In the meantime, as you've
figured, you'll have to use another search like Google.
