When opening the contacts window, it is empty("The folder is Empty"). When I
click the new contact button, a smaller box flashes up for a millisecond and
disappears. When I click the import button, a box comes up that is a white x
in a red circle on a white background. There is no information, just the
"ok" button at the bottom.

I followed the directions and set my defaults in contacts and mail and the
same thing happens.
