Contacts folders

Forgive me, but I am new to Vista and Windows Live Mail.

I set up my Contacts folder by importing addresses from Outlook Express
(.wab file). However, when creating a message from within Windows Live
Mail, not all of the Contacts are shown there. I placed the Contacts folder
on my desktop for easy access, and when I look there, the addresses that I
am missing are shown. It's as if the Windows Live Mail software is using
another Contacts folder.

I checked the Options tab under Tools to see if the address source requires
identification, but could not find such a reference.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

How did you "place" the folder on the desktop? Did you use the Move function
in the Location tab that appears in Contacts Folder Properties?

Went to the Windows logo in the lower left-hand corner, highlighted
Contacts, and then used Send to Desktop. I was assuming that there is only
one Contacts folder.

GGB

P.S. I am using Windows Home Premium, SP 1.

I think you should have done Start-User Name. right-clicked on Contacts,
chosen Properties, gone to the Location tab and used the Move
function....The Send To function creates a shortcut only (at least it does
here...)

It appears that there are two address lists used in Vista, as you folks
have noted -- one for Windows Live Mail, and the other Contacts list that
is stored under the User's name.

When in Windows Live Mail, by going the route of
Tools|Contacts|File|Import|Address Book for Current Windows User, I was able
to import into the Windows Live Mail address book all of the contacts that
show in the Contacts folder under my User Name. I am not sure why this
separation exists. I presume that new contacts added while in Windows Live
Mail are added to its address folder, which does not impact the Contacts
folder under one's User Name. Very complicated!

Thanks for the very prompt responses, and your assistance in helping me to
understand Vista a little bit more.

Gordon

Follow-up question: my import has now given me two address listings for each
contact. Evidently, contacts are not overwritten. Where is the Contacts
folder located for Windows Live Mail? I should have erased the entries
before importing.

Any future questions pertaining to WLM contacts should be asked
in the WLM newsgroup. The WLM contacts situation is quite
complex because WLM has the ability to select different sets of
contacts depending on which Live ID is current.

My error. Didn't realize that there is a news group dedicated to Live Mail.
I appreciate your bringing such to my attention.

No problem.
That's where the WLM experts hang out:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...e.mail.desktop
or via your news reader: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...e.mail.desktop
