I'm running Outlook 2007 SP1 MSO 12.0.6425.1000

I'll open a contact say jane doe and here's what I'll see for the
contact info/card

Email: (E-Mail Removed)
Display as: Joe Smith ((E-Mail Removed)) NOTE: a valid email address
for another contact of mine

I'll double click the email address to open the properties and I'll
see garbage characters for the display name as well as the email
address.

How I have to fix is cut the valid email address, wipe out the email &
display info,
paste the valid email address into notepad
the copy and paste back into the contact and save

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can't explain how this could have happened, but the only way I know to
correct it without using third-party tools is by manually changing the
information to what it should be.

Based solely on your description - would bet that some other program was
run against your Outlook folder. From a purely logical perspective - Email
DisplayAs is contained in the same item as the email address and the only
way that the EDA gets changed in/by Outlook itself is if a change was made
to the email address.

The chances of an entire contact folder being affected between 2 Outlook
sessions with nothing else having been done(run) are "extremely" unlikely -
Outlook by itself would never go through an entire folder to modify
contents. So the question begs - what is the missing piece to this (what
addins are there - sync processes etc were run etc)? There is the very,
very remote chance a segment of your hard drive has become unusable with
affected sectors containing a specific piece of your PST file but that
would be a real stretch.

Before making any kind of changes to this contact folder either directly or
by any 3rd party product would strongly suggest you run ScanPST to
eliminate any potential underlying issues and also make sure that your
contact folder has not become corrupted beyond this noticed issue (making a
backup of this PST would be very adivsable before doing anything to the
contents). ContactGenie Toolkit is something that may help in regenerating
your EDAs on a bulk basis -
http://www.contactgenie.com/toolkit_4_outlook.htm (if the PST/folder
itself has not sustained some other serious kind of corruption under the
surface that has not yet shown itself in some way)

Another possibility:
You need to pay very close attention when you create Contact Records.
Outlook will search your autocompletion cache for possible matches and if
found use the information from the cache to autocomplete various mail
fields. These fields may then be completed incorrectly if you aren't paying
attention to what Outlook is doing. Since your example uses two people with
the same name, it may be what's occurring here.

Karl,

The only thing I can think if is my BlackBerry desktop app.

I ran scanpst and think that may have cleared up some other issues I
was having but the contact's email is still whacked... My have to be
a manual fix for me.

Thanks everyone for your input.

Would hazard a guess that multiple issues were/are at play simply given the
number of Blackberry and Outlook users. If this was/is a universal issue -
the resulting outcry should be deafening.

Would suggest that you export your contact folder just to review the
contents to determine what else, if anything, may have been affected.
Alternatively, you may want to use the contact export function in
ContactGenie Toolkit (this export is fully functional - no purchase
required) since it can export far more fields then the Outlook export
wizard (http://www.contactgenie.com/toolkit_4_outlook.htm )
