Great article! As a student I often find that companies don't think of us as 'real' people, and aren't willing to treat us the same as non-students. Needless to say, this can be very frustrating. It's nice to have an overall roundup of our rights as a consumer!

This I Think I Will Do.. That Approch Has Never Come To Mind Before Even Though One Of My Greatest Fears Was That Some Rouge Application Would Connect My Machine To Some Wierd Premium Rate Porn Site Without My Knowladge For Hours On End ... Or Even When I Was Out Shopping And Left It Downloading And Then A Dialer Kicks In..... Then With My Luck As I Came Back Home A Passing Policeman Asks If He Could Use The Toilet!!....

When returning goods online does anyone know who is responsible for the additional postal costs.

I purcahesd a bundled mb / cpu / RAM online as they were cheaper than at a retailer.

I am now returning them as faulty by registered post.

The postage cost will be £18 back to the supplier, surely that should be fully refundable, but I'm waiting for confirmation from the company concerned.

If not I'll have ended up paying more than if i'd bought the items at a retailer.

Anyone know the law??

The law states "the Consumer must not be left out of pocket" ... in other words you can ask them to refund your postage even if your asking for a replacment to the returned faulty goods.

What an excellent article/contribution this is.
Anyone know if the same laws/controls apply to purchased 'services'. I am thinking here specifically of an ISP the service of which is completely unsatisfactory due to set up problems bringing endless breaks in service and who completely ignore all pleas for assistance.

Related to the SGA and SSGCR is the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 (SGSA), which provides protection for services such as disputes with Internet Service Providers (ISPs). This requires a supplier of a Service in England, Wales & Northern Ireland to ensure services are delivered within a reasonable time, at a reasonable rate, and with reasonable care & skill. In Scotland, such contracts are subject to Common Law.
