It is my understanding that Dye Sublimation printers are what is used to
print quality photographs. Are there any printers that can do this at the
consumer level or is this strictly high end professional printers. Is the
quality they print that much superior to what a good color laserjet can do?

There are some firms that make dye sublimation cartridges to fit into
limited consumer quality printers. I briefly looked at this for use
about six or twelve months ago.

Some of the Epson graphic consumer printers that were cheap were
included on the list of dye sub ink supplies I found. C60, I think.

Do a Google search for dye sublimation inks or dye sub printers or dye
sub cartridges.

You will quickly find the information you need, and it will be pretty
current.

I believe that dye sub is used for quality transfers, and not
necessarily for quality "prints". Your initial information may be only
slightly accurate.

Olympus P-400 can be had for well under $1K -- maybe even
half that. Also check out Kodak's 8500, also under $1K.

If you don't need letter-sized prints, there are 4x6" dye subs
even cheaper.

Watch out for media costs, though. You're probably looking
at around $1.50 per letter sized sheet. And you more or less
have to use an "approved" paper.

REcently, p400 goes for $300 or so. www.shopper.com

Also, 4x6" prints from Sony dye-sub printers.

Canon also has one I think.

all <$500, the Sony was $199.
