When I boot up, my system goes into a disk checking mode,
including cheqdisk and I subsequently get a message that
one or more of my hard drives should be checked for
consistency. What is "consistency" and how do I check
for it, and what do I do when I do it?

Go to the Manufacturers site of the Hard Drive and see if you can download a
Diagnostic Utility.
