I'm in the market for a new printer to replace my "tired" HP-970 inkjet.
(It's got so many "puddles" of ink inside it I can no longer print envelopes
without stray smudges on them).

As I do print pictures from time to time (roughly 40 glossy pages/month),
and want higher quality output than I currently have with the 970, I had
been very close to buying the Canon 950i inkjet, as virtually every review
I've seen for it raves about its photo quality output.

However, some new printers "coming soon" from HP have caught my attention.
In particular, they're supposed to be coming out with an 8-color inkjet, the
HP-7960, next month sometime. I guess they added a gray cartridge to this
model, which also has an LCD viewer and memory card slots.

Anyone have any thoughts as to the "wisdom" of waiting for the new HP 7960,
or going ahead with the Canon 950i?

I've got the 950, and love it. Don't see how you can do any better. The
extra grey would benefit you in B&W printing, mainly. If you're into that,
then maybe should wait and see.

One thing I'm curious about: typically, the number of gray values available
is only 256 because of the 16m colors in a computer image only 256 have
equal values of red, blue, and green. 256 isn't very much; are you using
48-bit color?

No too wild about having to swap out cartridges for ANY reason, but maybe it
can't be helped. On the other hand, the H-P will align the printheads
automatically...the Canon 950i doesn't have that capability (even though the
printheads aren't part of the cartridges). Looks like the HP offers an
automatic duplexer (like the HP-970 I currently own). Wonder if it works
any differently. While having the duplexer in my 970 is great, the fact
that the printing area is reduced when using it is a serious drawback.

Bob,

It's good to know my duplexer will work with the 7960. That, coupled with
the fact that I've got H-P photo paper already, may sway me to the 7960 when
it's available for purchase (next month?).

I may go a step farther, though, and get an inexpensive laser printer to use
for my B&W needs, and use the 7960 (or Canon 950i) for photos and color
printing. Seems to me that, if I did that, I'd never have to swap
cartridges in the 7960.

| The duplexer from your DeskJet 970 can be used on the Photosmart 7xxx
printers.

(automatically
| scaling the image to fit) or print with normal size borders (although the
| "back" side will have the larger margin at the top rather than the bottom
