Considerations for Splitting a .mdb 2003 db in 2007

I have been scanning these posts thoroughly, and I want to make sure that
there aren't any 'gotchas' I am not aware of. I know to follow Joan Wild's
process to split the db. Once split, since I already have ULS in place, as
long as the FE is on the users' server (or PC), in a trusted location(?) with
the user having read/write/update rights on the folder where the BE is, I
think the .mdw has to be in the folder with the BE, correct?
Part of my confusion comes from the fact that we are going to put this
out to servers in other parts of this state, on the East coast, and in the
central part, and the West coast, but the BE will be here. The network guys
are wanting the FE to be on the remote servers, not the PCs at the remote
sites.
Any advice, comments, etc., would be most sincerely appreciated. TIA
