connects to voip but not web pages

our laptop with windows xp installed has suddenly stopped opening web pages.

It is normally connected to the modem via a wireless adaptor. The belkin
modem 'utility page' shows the modem as being connected to the internet.

Connecting the lap top to the modem via a cable enables us connected to our
voip phone, so something is getting through, but it still will not open web
pages. Grateful for any advice, thanks.

I'll bet a £ to a pinch of **** you're running ZoneAlarm.

Using another computer go to ZoneAlarm's website. Apparently there's a
fix for your problem there.

Your problem is that ZA doesn't play well with one of the latest Windows
XP updates. There have been a few posts in this group over the last few
days with this problem.

I told the OP that.

From the standpoint of a novice, it's not easy to see quite how one would
'google' in such a problem? Would be grateful for a 'mini' education, (i.e.
an example) on that.

Well, first off I would have searched this newsgroup for recent posts
regarding an inability to see pages in IE or trouble with an internet
connection. Failing that , I would have gone to Google Groups using my
browser and used similar search terms there.

Fortunately I would have found a post made in this group on Sunday at
00.42am by 'Pixel' titled 'Internet Connection Problem' which describes
symptoms similar to your own. On reading the follow-up posts in the
thread I would further have discovered that the OP's problem is exactly
like yours and also that the solution was offered by 'Fergal' at 1.09am
in that thread.

Subsequent to that thread there was at least one post made here, the
solution to which was the same as Pixel's original post (and yours).

In this case Google would have been unnecessary as your answer was
posted in this group 41 hours before you before you posted your OP.

You did, yes. Unfortunately, it took you some 20 lines while it took
"nobody" just 4.

Sounds to me like you have some DNS server issues.
