I have winxp and recently my media player quit working. I
contacted Gateway and they informed me I would have to do
a repair xp installation. Since doing this I have been
unable to set up an internet connection. I have contacted
both Sprint and Gateway and Gateway tells me I'll have to
reinstall windows completely. When I try to set up a
connection with Connection Wizard, one of my options
should be to connection using a sign on. I have DSL. The
only box I can check is to connect with an always on
connection. I have tried repairing my connections etc but
nothing works. Any ideas or do I have to reinstall
windows? How will that help? I really hate to have to
reinstall. I have a lot of stuff I don't want to lose and
it would take forever to back everything up.

1. Run a virus scan with up to date virus definitions first
2. Turn off Internet Connection Firewall or other firewalls while troubleshooting. Turn back on when you are done
3. Are all the lights green on your DSL modem
4. Turn off the DSL modem then turn it back on wait a few minutes(5 or 6) for it to restart
5. Verify with your ISP(Sprint ?) that your TCP/IP settings are correct(dynamic or static with the correct addressing
6. Make sure Internet Explorer connection settings are correct (should be never dial for DSL
7. Off course try connecting after each step

I know these instruction are brief but they are a few things that might help. The best tool to diagnose this is the "ping" command. You can read about it in the Windows XP Help and Support. Just search for ping. I would try this before resorting to reloading the OS

Just wanted to let anyone know who reads this. After
doing the XP repair installation. I found out from a tech
I know that the reason I couldn't establish an internet
connection was because I needed to reload SP1. He gave me
a disk and everything was fine after I downloaded all the
updates etc. Thanks to the guy who responded. I
appreciated the input.
