Most of the connection problems between Win9x PCs and Win2000 PCs occur
because people do not appreciate that Win2000 is a secure operating system
whereas Win9x is wide open.
It's like you moving from a boy scout camp (where the tents are never
locked, of course!) into a bank (where everything is locked). I suspect your
average boy scout would feel quite confused in a bank, with or without his
compass.
The connection problems will immediately disappear when these simple rules
are followed:
1. Create some account/password on the Win2000 PC.
2. On the Win9x PC, log on with that same account/password.
The second most common network connectivity problem is caused by a lack of
understanding of TCP/IP. You write "I've checked the network protocols,
connection settings", yet you do not state a single thing about them. Here
are the items that are essential for successful operation under TCP/IP:
- IP address
- Subnet mask
- Default Gateway
- DNS address
If this sounds complicated then keep in mind that your machine is capable of
communicating with any PC anywhere on the globe. It therefore must have some
unique identifier, and some means by which it knows how to reach the rest of
the world.
