the next thing I'd try is the adware check and Winsock repair
described in
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm.
If that doesn't solve it, the next thing is to uninstall the
entire network including the network adapter driver, then
reinstall Service Pack 2, then install the network components
again.
But I'm only stabbing around in the dark. I don't know this
particular problem.
