Connection Laptop-Desktop How to configure?

High!
I'm going to buy a laptop and I want to connect it to a desktop to transfer
data between them.
I was told that I'll have to use a net cable (RJ45) but I do not know how to
configure Windows Vista.
Can someone tell me how to do that?

That depends on how you are going to connect them.

What I want is just connecting two computers to transfer data and disconnect
them after data is transferred. I don't want to use any hub, just a cable.

Then you need a cross-over cable, NOT a straight J45 patch cable....

That's OK. But do I have to configure both PCs or Windows Vista from each PC
recognizes the other one?

Assuming each machine has a network card, plug the cross-over cable into
each, then do the New Network wizard on each machine.Just follow the
instructions...
