For several months now my messengers MSN & Yahoo, as well as Netscape and
Mozilla Firefox, have been unable to detect my connection to the internet. I
connect mostly by DSL through my Network port but also via Wireless when I am
out and about. No matter how I connect, I still can't get them to work now.
Up until around August or around there my Yahoo Messenger worked fine but
stopped when I tried to upgrade to the next messenger. And when I tried to
revert back to the older version, it still would not connect. Ever since
Explorer 7 came out it has been trying to update to it but 7 won't work
either, only version 6 and I hesitate to upgrade anything anymore.

A couple of days ago I got a bunch of updates and when they installed my
Yahoo Web Messenger stopped working. I can receive messages but mine won't go
out to the recipient.

I am frustrated to the point of deleting all the updates ever installed on
this computer. I have a Gateway laptop with an Intel Centrino Processor and
512 MG RAM, and an 80 Gig hdd.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

one will help.

Flush DNS

Click Start, Run, type:

IPConfig /FlushDNS [Press Enter key]

NETSH

Click Start, Run, type:

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter key

Restart the system

Joe, Thanks for the input but it didn't work. I did everything in order you
suggested. I started with the DNS flush, and moved through the LSP fix
program you suggested. Nothing seemed to work. I installed every version of
Yahoo messenger I could get my hands on from version 6 on through to the
currently offered version. I am very frustrated with this and what makes it
worse is that I no longer have the recovery CD's from the manufacturer, they
were stolen, and the computer is out of warranty. Any other suggestions?
Anything I can look for or describe to help figure this out? I can build
computers all day long, but when it comes to diagnostics, I suck, lolol.

What firewall are you using? It might be blocking access. Try
disabling the firewall.

Already tried that, lol. Both firewall on, firewall off, included the
firewall exceptions, cleared and rebuilt the exception files. I am using the
standard Windows XP firewall.

Can you browse to different sites?

Have you tried running SFC? Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click
OK. If any files are damaged or missing, they'll be replaced. You may
need to reboot afterwards so damaged files will be replaced.

You might have to reinstall to get it working. The fact that two
devices won't let you communicate, both DSL and wireless kinda' limits
your options.

As long as I use IExplorer version 6, I can browse whereever, but if I try
installing any other browser or messenger, it won't work, Netscape, Firefox,
Yahoo messenger, MSN messenger, all of them.

I will try the SFC scan and let you know.

I hope I don't have to reinstall, I no longer have the recovery discs from
Gateway and they will not provide Tech support, it ran out of Warranty in May.

I'll let you know.

Well, No dice. I tried the SFC cleanup but it didn't work. I'll check out
the TCP repairs you recommend, but at this point I don't know if I want to
hold my breathe, lolol.

No, if you can browse with IE, I doubt it's a TCP problem. Have you
checked for malware? It's doubtful you have any though; it would attack
IE certainly, if there was any.

they have to send me the updates as a packet Via Email. The Auto-updaters
don't work, they don't recognize a connection either. Also, if it helps, if I
download a program and it uses a downloader to get the install file, it
doesn't work as well.

I also have Two different Adware/Spyware programs. Neither the Antivirus nor
the adware/spyware can find any problems. Never found a virus and the adwares
and spywares, pnce cleaned have never been reinfected, so I doubt that is
whats going on.

I am at my wits end, as I am confident so are you. Dont feel bad about not
figuring this one out, I will probably just have to junk this Laptop and save
my money until I can afford a new computer. Being on disability sucks, they
don't give you enough ti live on and expect you to get back to work as soon
as possible, regardless of whats wrong. I have been off work for 18 months
now from a crushed ankle, six surgeries and tons of therapy and I am just now
beginning to walk again.
