I’m trying to connect a machine running vista ultimate to a 2000 server
network. My two vista machines can see each other through my hub; they can
also see my internet router. They cannot see any machine running 2000 pro,
or 2000 server. I’m running fixed IP addresses; I’ve verified workgroup
names, IP addresses, DNS addresses, etc. and still cannot see what’s wrong?
Any suggestions?

I don't know about server 2000, but for XP a possible solution is in
KB922120.
