just a quick question: Which versions of vista can connect to a windows 2003
active directory domain?

Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate. If the domain is SBS based you need some
updates for the server to get full SBS functionality.

I purchased a new workstation for our office with Vista Ultimate. Our server
is running SBS 2003. I just updated the server to SP1. I've gone through
all the updates that I could find in order for the workstation to join the
domain. I also confirmed that the Computer Name and User Accounts have been
added to the server. However, I'm still not able to get the Vista
workstation to see the server. When I try to change to the appropriate
domain, I get the following error message (I've been pulling my hair out for
the last two days trying to figure this out so any help would be greatly
appreciated!!!):

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.HRE.LOCAL

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are not
registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server
automatically when a AD DC is added to a domain. They are updated by the AD
DC at set intervals. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the
following IP addresses:

167.206.3.228
167.206.3.161
167.206.3.227

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child
zone:

HRE.LOCAL
LOCAL
.. (the root zone)

For information about correcting this problem, click Help.

Those are public IP addresses for the DNS servers. Normally with SBS the
clients should only be pointing to the SBS server for DNS and nothing else.
This could also mean you have the domain name wrong. Did you install the SBS
server updates for Vista clients?

You've entered a DNS name for the domain (hre.local). Vista is trying to do
a DNS lookup to find the DC, but is failing because that domain is not
registered externally, where your DNS servers are. You have a few options:
- point your Vista box to the DC for DNS service; configure the DC to
forward requests for non-local domains to your ISP's servers.
- Try joining with the domain name "hre" rather than "hre.local". Since
it's not a DNS name, Vista should broadcast for the name and find the DC if
it's on the same subnet.
