the nic port using a patch (null) cable; one being windows 2000 machine
and the other being either windows 2000 or windows xp (home edition) ?

If by "patch (null) cable" you're referring to a crossover
cable, you might find this article helpful:

Direct Crossover Connection Setup: Windows 95/98/ME To Windows
XP
http://www.cellarstoneindia.com/cable_pdf/LanCrossOverCableConnection%20(95-98-MeToXP).pdf

You can skip over the part which deals with installing NetBEUI.
As long as both systems have TCP/IP installed, you should be
fine.

Good luck

First off, you have to share the resources you want to access.
That's accomplished through the folder or drives Properties
sheet. Right click what you want to share and click on the
Sharing tab. Take a look at the sections titled Level 4 and
Level 5 in this article:

How to configure file sharing in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;304040

Keep in mind that if you're trying to access resources on a
Windows 2000 system, you'll have to create User accounts on
that machine that are identical in User Name and Password to
the account that you're logged on with on the other machine.

How To Share Files and Folders Over a Network for Workgroups in
Windows 2000

Good luck

Install TCP/IP protocol on each, make sure they're both on the same subnet
something like 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0, no
default gateway. You'll want to create an account (in Users and Passwords)
on each Win2k machine(s) with the username and password that you use to
logon to the other machine(s) with. Then you'll need to share out the
resource(s) with permissions for those users. Also make sure they're all
part of the same workgroup. Then you'll no longer be prompted for the IPC$
password Inter-process communication)

In a peer level workgroup, when you try to access resources on a Windows
2000 machine, Windows 2000 needs to authenticate the user. If the user
account doesn't exist in it's local account database, then access will be
denied.

Also turn off any firewalls.
