Connecting to shared database

We are trying to connect a PC to the shared Database in BCM for Outlook 2007.
Here is our setup; 2 servers running 2008 in 2 different locations connected
with a hardware VPN and the servers are Active Directory synched and on the
same domain. The shared database is on a network share on one of the
servers. Everyone that is in the same location as the server can access the
database fine. Now at the other location they have a drive mapped to the
'remote' server and they can see the database through Explorer. We cannot
connect to it when setting up BCM, when we enter the computer name it says it
cannot be found or can't start the database server. Is there something extra
we need to do to connect from the remote location??

Thanks
