Connecting Remotely

Hi,

I'd like to be able to connect to a PC on our network either via Remote
Desktop, Remote Assistance, or any way possible (both PCs running XP
Pro). I'd like to perform this without any intervention from the PC
that I'd like to connect to. Of note, no one will be using this PC and
there is no monitor, it is used solely for running reports from a
program that we use. Also, no one will be able to, for example, accept
a Remote Assistance invitation and I'm not sure if Remote Desktop is
possible with XP machines. So, my question is; would I be able to
connect to this PC with the above constraints and if so, how would I go
about doing so?

Thanks.

No problem at all:
- Enable Remote Desktop on the host machine.
- Allow your account to use Remote Desktop on the host machine.

The one caveat here is that if your target machine at work is protected by a
firewall on the company network it's no go until you get a port forwarded
through the firewall.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306759

What this means is that if you have 10 machines at work you will have to
forward port 3389 in the firewall on the router to point at the IP address
of the target machine. You can get this by using RDP from a machine on the
same network and calling it by it's \\name. Once connected you can use
ipconfig and then configure the router to point port 3389 requests at
whatever ipconfig told you. If you know the admin password for the
monitor-less machine you should get in with no trouble.

If you ever wanted to access one of the other 9 machines you would have to
change the listening port on that machine and forward a port on the router,
that way you can choose which machine to connect to.
