Connecting Outlook 2007 to Exchange through VPN locks computer

I used to connect for a long time through a Cisco VPN 4.0.3 my Outlook 2003
client to an Exchange Server through POP3 in order to receive my emails. My
operating system was XP(SP2).
After I rebuilt my computer I installed Outlook 2007. All other software is
the same (XP-SP2, Cisco VPN). As long as I am not connected through VPN,
Outlook works OK (receiving emails through POP3 from other email providers)
but as soon as I enable my VPN connection, most of the time (not always)
especially when I have many emails to download, Outlook freezes my computer
while receiving emails from the above mentioned Exchange Server. If I am
disabling my Exchange Server account and I am clicking on Send/Receive
nothing happens so the freezing occurrs only when receiving emails from
Exchange.
Regarding this freezing I have to say that I lose any control of the
computer so not even CTR+ALT+DEL is not working anymore so that I have to
turn off computer and restart it. Although I waited a couple of hours nothing
happened and eventually I had to reset the computer.
I tried to figure out if VPN interacts with another program but several
things make me believe that Outlook is the only one:
- I do not have any programs installed on my computer that I did not have
before except for the new version of Office
- I kept VPN connected while Outlook was closed and worked normally and
nothing happened
- I closed all programs and un-necessary services and enabled the VPN
connection and opened Outlook and I got the problem.
It is true that this issue is not happening all the time but it is happening
especially if you have more emails to download. However, it might happen from
the first downloaded emails or after a while (I did not see any rule in
this).
I also have to specify that I have installed Business Contact Manager for
Outlook but this one is based on a local database and has nothing to do with
the remote Exchange I am trying to connect to.
Is this behavior known?
Is this something as a known bug or there is something known that should be
done in order to avoid something like this?

Thank you,
