I just got this new camera as a replacement for my older ZR70 that was stolen
a few months ago. I never had any trouble with the old one so I figured a
newer one would work just as well or better. Well, I go to use it today for
the first time and I cannot get windows to recognize the camcorder. It sees
the firewire card but not the camera. The camera recognizes that its
connected to the card by its screen saying "DV-IN" and thats it. I'm not sure
what else to try at this point. Anyone have somewhere for me to start?

I'm using WinXP Pro SP2
Connecting using Adaptec Fireconnect for Notebooks

Since you're connecting it to a notebook, it may be a power issue. Did you
have the camcorder running off the mains a/c and not its internal battery.
If not, try that.

I don't think its that. I always use supplied power adapter when copying
video data from my camera.

I've now tried it on my home laptop, another work laptop all with the same
result. The firewire card installs fine but nothing when I plug in the camera.

I'm thinking its a driver problem but not sure where or what to try as far
as camcorder drivers. Every other camera that I've ever connected to XP Pro
has had a driver.

What software are you using to capture from camera?
You should have Movie Maker, it's part of XP, try capturing from camera into
that.

I've got three video capture programs, Ulead, MS Movie Maker and another one
I use for sports. None works. All say that no video device is connected.

I couldn't find anything on Canon support site but I guess I'll have to give
one more try. See if they have any known issues with this model. If I can't
find anything I guess I'll have to get rid of this camera and try something
else. I hate to get stumped like that but oh well. Win some, lose some.

From what I can tell, the ZR800 should not require any additional driver, XP
having the Canon driver as part of it (I believe the driver is fairly
standard). A quick check of the Canon site shows that no additional driver
is available. Have you checked in device manager to see if the camcorder
has been detected but is disabled in some way. Look for a "!" symbol next
to the camcorder under imaging devices. Alternatively it may be shown as an
unknown device (disconnect to confirm that it dissappears). If it does
appear in device manager, try uninstalling the device and reconnecting it.
If it isn't in device manager then it is rather looking that the camcorder
may be faulty in some way.
