I have a problem to solve:
I have Windows XP, a Dell Inspiron 5315, a Linksys router - WRT160N-, and a
Lynksys Compact Wireless - G USB Adapter.

Here is the problem, when I set the WEP to enable, I try and connect to the
router, but then it asks for a user name and password. No idea what it is or
why it asks for that. It doen't ask for the WEP paraphrase, or key, when I
try to connect to it. This is on a desktop trying to connect to wireless.
I tried a laptop and connected enough to get to the internet. I then took
the WEP enabled off and it gets to the internet fine on the desktop.
Why is it asking for a username and password, or how do I connect? I have
never seen this before and I have set up a few wireless including my own.

Any help or direction would be great.

Not sure if this is your problem but may be worth a try...

If the first time you connected, the WEP security was disabled the
wireless software might have remembered the connection in a
"profile" setting. When you next turn on the WEP and try
reconnecting, the saved profile recognizes the SSID and applies all
the previous profile settings to the connections -- which is now
wrong because WEP is now enabled.

After turning WEP on, try finding and deleting the existing profile.
Then try reconnecting. At this point it should recognize the WEP and
ask for WEP credentials.

Each Router has a ID and Password in order to connect to its menus, it is
the same whether you use wire or wireless.
WEP is a specific security just for the Wireless traffic and it has nothing
to do with the ID and PW of the Router's menus.
The Default ID and PW of a Router are usually stated in the manual.
If your Router was changed and you do not know the info. read the Router's
manual concerning the Hard Reset of the Router.
After Hard Reset the ID and PW would be at the Default as described the
manual.
You also have to reconfigure every thing else after Hard Reset.
If you do not have the ID AND PW there is No other choice but to Hard Reset.
