How to connect two machines using cat 5 cross over cable.

hi,

I have two desktops at my home.I want to connect those
two machines using cat5 crossover cable. I have connected
two machines using cat5 cable and restarted.But IP is not
coming for one of the machine. can you pls tell me the
procedure for connecting two machines using cross cables.
