My friend has a DELL that always shows the current Internet connect
speed on corner of his desktop I think. He asks me what produces
this? I have no idea.

Try Start\Control Panel\Network Connections. Open the proprieties box of the
connection. On the General Tab at bottom is a box that reads "Show Icon in
notification area when connected." To show the icon check the box, and to
remove the icon, remove the check mark.
