Connect PC to Mac

I have a PC and Mac on my desk and want to network them. The PC is new and
is running XP Home with 10/100 ethernet. The Mac is old and runs 10BaseT
ethernet under MacOS 8.6

Can anyone tell me how to connect the two? They are physically connected but
I'm having trouble connecting them on my Microsoft network.
